The influence of preoperative starvation on blood glucose concentration in children

Abstract
It is well known that preoperative starvation is necessary to prevent inhalation of vomits on induction of anesthesia. But the influence of preoperative starvation on .blood glucose concentration in pediatric, patients remains still controversial.
Blood glucose concentration was measured in 110 children aged between 6 months and 12 years before induction of anesthesia and during surgery. Children received either 5 % dextrose, Hartmann¢¥s or 1:2 solution during preoperative starvation.
Mean blood glucose concentration was 87 and 1301g% before induction of anesthesia and during surgery respectively, its difference was significant statistically (p<0.001).
No significant correlation¡¯s were found between blood glucose concentration before induction of anesthesia and weight, duration of starvation, and kind and volume of fluid, but hypoglycemia (defined as blood glucose concentration less than 50 mg %) was found in 4 of children younger than 6 years in spite of administration of glucose containing fluid.
It is suggested that to minimize the risks of hypoglycemia and inhalation of vomitus on induction of anesthesia, children younger than 6 years should be given attention to preoperative starvation more carefully.
